The League of Legends World Championship 2024 playoffs continue on Friday, October 18, with Korea’s Hanwha Life Esports facing China’s Bilibili Gaming in the second quarterfinal.
Hanwha Life are $1.74 favourites to defeat the LoL Pro League (LPL) top seed, which looks generous when comparing Swiss Stage performances. Although a relatively small sample size, those games hold a lot of weight in cross-regional fixtures, as there are too many variables when comparing results from two different leagues.
Despite being priced as one of the favourites to win LoL Worlds 2024, Bilibili Gaming have not performed well during the main stage. Chen “Bin” Ze-Bin and co. have only beaten MAD Lions KOI, PSG Talon and G2 Esports, but they came very close to dropping a map against Talon and were hardly deserving of their victory against G2.
Bilibili Gaming averaged a +405 gold difference at 15 minutes (GD@15), which reveals one of the main reasons for their struggles. Even though the Chinese juggernauts are very efficient at closing out matches where they enter mid-game with a lead, that has not happened often at LoL Worlds 2024.
Another key factor is unforced errors, which have been the theme of Bilibili Gaming’s defeats this tournament. However, even though it is easy to find issues with the Chinese squad, Hanwha Life Esports are not flawless.
The LoL Champions Korea (LCK) 2024 Summer champions have a +1242 GD@15, significantly better than Bilibili Gaming. Still, they’ve had a fairly easy road, with victories over FlyQuest and PSG Talon along with a very close win against G2 Esports.
Their only real test, against Gen.G, ended in a convincing loss and should be a better indication of how Hanwha Life usually do when faced with a tougher opponent. Past results show they will stomp on weaker teams by praying on mistakes but struggle against anyone at their own level due to an inability to create chances for themselves.
While LoL Worlds 2024 statistics would suggest one thing, the stylistic differences make Bilibili Gaming a no-brainer pick at plus money.
